Jasmine tea, like many of the world’s best teas, has its unique origin story. The origin of Jasmine tea is said to have begun with a Beijing tea merchant named Chen Guqiu who, many years ago, invited a tea master to his home for a tasting. They chatted while sipping their tea, and eventually got around to discussing how northerners and southerners drink their tea differently. After brewing two cups of tea, one for himself and one for the tea master, Chen had a servant bring him the bag of tea a young southern woman had given him a few months ago. Once the tea was prepared, the men raised their teacup covers and saw in awe as the apparition of a young woman carrying two jasmine branches appeared in the mist. The guys couldn’t believe it. The tea master didn’t hesitate before asking the man whether he had lately performed any acts of kindness. Then Chen recalled seeing a young woman three years prior at a motel who had ran out of money after her father passed away. Chen gave her some money to help with her living expenses at the time. When he returned to the hotel three years later, the young woman gave him a bag of tea and a handwritten note of gratitude. The innkeeper informed him that she had passed away the previous year when he inquired about her location. After hearing this, the Tea Master stated, “In my view, the gods are ordering you to start creating teas coated with jasmine.” Chen believed the master, ordered some jasmine-layered tea, and the rest is history.
In honour of the young lady who has been forgotten by the sands of time, Jasmine Green, which is based on a sencha popular in Japan, is a treat thanks to its delicate grassiness and the addition of luscious, enticing jasmine. To the magnificent legend that you are.
