One of the most beautiful sights in London is the garden of Buckingham Palace. Considering the palace’s location in the heart of London, visitors are sometimes surprised by how quiet it is in the quadrangle behind the iconic façade. This is hardly a tiny garden, after all. In the garden, you’ll find a lake with an island, an arboretum, rose beds, and a big marble vase that was a gift from King Edward VII. The boundary of the garden is made up of 170 metres of shrubbery.
Although gardens are usually peaceful, the day of a garden party is usually rather lively. There are certain days of the year when the Queen welcomes up to 8,000 of her most devoted subjects to her palace for a day of tea and finger sandwiches. The wait to enter is enormous, as it is with any major British attraction. Garden parties are a relatively recent phenomenon.
Until Elizabeth II became queen in 1958, the palace hosted annual debutante balls. The new monarch’s first item of business was to do away with the upper-class balls in favour of the now-famous garden parties, which were open to all her people.
This is a fitting description, given the central role that tea plays in British society. In honour of the Queen’s long-standing preference for tea over debutantes, we’ve blended the finest green teas from around the former British Empire. Beginning with a pot of Chinese Jasmine Green Tea, the tea from which the British Isles got their supply. Exceptional Darjeeling and Kenyan green teas were selected for variation. Finishing off the mixture with a sprinkling of cornflower and jasmine petals for colour and to honour Buckingham’s lush gardens. The result is a cup of tea fit for a Royal Family. Ta ta.
