Russia has a long history of tea consumption. The beverage was originally made available in the nation in 1618, during the Tsarist era. During the time, the Chinese embassy to Moscow gave numerous chests of tea to Tsar Michael Fedorovich as a gift. The tea was initially not warmly received, despite the famed Russian grace with which the Tsar accepted the gift. Why? Warm fruit and herbal beverages were customary among the tsar’s court. The new beverage tasted a little bit bitter to me. Russian mythology claims that one of Tsar Michael’s chefs came up with the notion of enhancing the flavour of tea by adding fruit and spices. Onions, ginger, rice, salt, orange peel, and various herbs and spices were among the mixtures that were tested. It came out that the overly sweetened blends with citrus fruit were the most well-liked of these.
As the years passed, the practise of drinking tea in this way spread throughout Russia and the Samovars, and a distinctive and traditional Russian teapot became commonplace across the continent. Today, Russians continue to drink tea at a rate that is among the highest in the world per capita, and they do so throughout the day.
This excellent Russian Earl Grey was created by our master blender in honour of Tsar Michael (and his kitchen crew!). In keeping with Russian tradition, we’ve added acidic bergamot to the sweet orange peel and a mellowing herb—all-natural lemongrass (the citrus fruit used to flavour all Earl Grey teas).
This tea will appeal to you because it is both sweet and incredibly calming. You can add additional milk to really bring out the citrus undertones in this combination, or you can add sugar to make it sweeter Russian style! In either case, you’ll want to enjoy delicious tea all day.
