Tea plantations established by British colonists in the Assam Valley in the 1850s and 1860s were plagued by challenges brought on by the region’s native flora and fauna. The most dangerous foes they had to contend with were elephants, king cobras, and monkey armies. Since it could kill with a single swipe of its massive paws and take small children, the adult Bengal tiger was one of the most feared creatures. Apparently, plantation labourers would boil water and flavour it with fruits and spices grown on the estate and drink this concoction to stave off hunger and thirst. The fruit would provide them with their needed daily intake of vitamins, and the cinnamon would calm their rumbling tummies. How about the tea, then? Just imagine trying to get by in England without your daily cup of tea. Relive the rituals of the British tea growers by preparing for another day in the “Ulu” with a cup of “Royal Bengal Tiger Tea.”
