That’s the gist of an old poem that’s important to an annual festival in Sendai, a city of a million people in Japan’s Tohoku, called Tanabata. Orihime, daughter of the Sky King, and Hikoboshi, a lowly shepherd, met and became lovers, this festival is to honour their chance encounter. Orihime’s father forbade his daughter and Hikoboshi from getting married. Instead, he compromised and proposed that they meet annually on opposing sides of the Milky Way. Being stars themselves, the two lovers can only celebrate their union at night under the starry sky, which further adds to the ambiance of ethereal romance. The poem describes a nocturnal scene in which the stars glitter like grains of sand on the Milky Way’s shores and the breezes blow the bamboo leaves.
