Mountain Dragon Green Tea, like many things that have been around for a few thousand years, comes with a fantastic backstory. There’s an old tale of a lone tea master who was attacked by robbers while working in the Yunnan highlands. The robbers beat him up and made off with a year’s supply of tea. He was about to leave for the market. The artisan’s cries were lost in the dense Yunnan jungle since he worked and lived alone. There was no moon that night, and the craftsman didn’t have the energy to start a fire, so nighttime arrived and brought full darkness. He drifted off to sleep after deciding to seek help from the nearby settlement the following morning. The tea maker had a dream about a dragon that night. Beast said he knew what the bandits did since he was the good deity of a neighbouring mountain top. If the craftsman really needed assistance, he should get out of bed and come see him at the peak of the mountain, he said. Still In his dream, the tea maker was concerned about how he would reach him given the darkness and his injuries. The dragon assured him that he would have both light and a warm wind to help him up the mountain since dragon-fire would illuminate his way.
The craftsman complied and arrived at the dragon’s lair before sunrise. Once the dragon was satisfied with the artisan’s response, it ordered him to his back. To catch the robbers as they entered town, they all dove into the valley below. The dragon breathed fire, turning the thieves to ash, and then swooped down to recover the stolen tea and return the craftsman safely to his house. A full recovery of the man’s health and vitality was accomplished before the dragon flew away.
As a gesture of gratitude, the craftsman mixed the retrieved tea with safflower petals, which he believed represented the flaming fury of the winged beast. The man’s mix was so lucrative that he was able to marry a stout and lovely woman, freeing him from the isolation of single life. Brew a pot of this magnificent Yunnan green and the might of the dragon will be working for you.
