True blue mango! The very name of this mysterious fruit is a mystery. Many people appear to have been captivated by the blue mango at various points in history. There’s Indian writer David Davidar, whose most recent book is The House of Blue Mangoes. When discussing the blue mango in his writing, he used the phrase “astonishingly lovely” to describe how the fruit stands out against the tree’s dark green foliage.
As its Thai name suggests, this fruit is associated with “The Brahmin Who Sells His Wife.” Legend has it that a Thai man fell in love with a Blue Mango and sold his wife to get his hands on basketful of the fruit. Legends from the East say that after eating just one blue mango, your taste for sweetness will be completely gone for the next three days. It just took one sip of the blue mango tea for us to realize that this fruit belonged in a cup of tea.
For the blend, we decided on a green Sencha varietal. The smooth, sweet flavour and almost honey-like aftertaste of this tea do wonders for enhancing the mango flavour found in the fruit itself. Interestingly, the Sencha foundation from which its characteristic smoothness is derived also produces teas with a lively, vibrant flavour. We’re confident that you’ll find that this tea’s combination of flavours is truly extraordinary. Don’t say we didn’t warn you if, after trying it, you find yourself contemplating selling a family member to pay for more.
